Mastectomy Advice

Many doctors will recommend that you come to Rigby & Peller after surgery to be expertly fitted for your new underwear. Our fitters have been professionally and specifically trained to fit our mastectomy customers.

When you are purchasing a new mastectomy bra, it is essential that you try it on with your prosthesis and that you buy bras that fit your good side and then fit the prosthesis to match.

It is most important that you feel comfortable and confident as you move around. Your bra should not move around ensuring that your prosthesis remains in place. Also, remember that it is incredibly important that you like the bras that you purchase.

We recommend that when you make your first mastectomy bra purchase you give yourself at least two bras to start with. You need to have a bra for everyday use and one for evening wear. You can always build up your lingerie wardrobe in time; we recommend to all our customers that they have at least seven bras.

We do not recommend buying a bra with pockets as the prosthesis falls away from the chest wall as you bend forward. Rigby & Peller recommend that our customers are fitted every six months.

Mastectomy Bra Fitting Advice

If you have prosthesis on one side, when fitting a new bra make sure that you fit your breast first and adjust the bra as required, then add your prosthesis.

If you have had a double mastectomy, fit the bra to you and then add both your prosthesis and adjust the bra as required.

Make sure that you move around in your new bra. Lift your arms above you head and make sure it does not ride up and is still giving you the desired effect while keeping your prosthesis in place.

Because wear and tear and washing will relax the fit of a bra we always recommend that you fasten it on the loosest hooks. The band should still be very snug. Also remember that because bra straps move, you need to check them to make sure that they haven't moved.

Mastectomy Swimwear

Most of the time when we are in swimwear, we're either lying down on our towel soaking up the sun or swimming. With this in mind, we recommend that when trying on swimwear you lie down so as to ensure that your prosthesis will stay in place.

Buy a suit with a pocket and put a swim pad inside so that you do not damage your good prosthesis. Wonderful swimwear with pockets is available with lovely cover-ups to match.
